In my opinion, one of the most amazing things about the museum was the courtyard and gardens on the property. This area of ​​the museum features statues, flowers, fountains, and a beautiful view of Sarasota Bay. There were many styles featured within the museum itself, including many Spanish and Baroque works, and a large collection of canvases by Peter Paul Rubens who was a proponent of the cheerful style which placed emphasis on colour, movement and even on sensuality. This museum really has so much to offer that staying there for three or four hours doesn't do it justice. With over 28,000 awe-inspiring works, it would be ideal to dedicate a day to each section of the museum to see the art the way it deserves to be seen. Seeing artwork in person is a completely different experience than seeing artwork online. When I look at works of art online or through a textbook, I can never truly feel the presence of the works and for this reason I am often unable to give the works of art the admiration it truly deserves. Seeing the art in person allows you to truly feel the presence of the artwork on display and admire the smallest structural details within the artwork that could not be seen if you were viewing it second hand. One work of art that really caught my attention in this museum is the Annunciation by Benedetto Gennari II, 1686. It is a beautiful oil painting on canvas created by the Italian painter during the Baroque period. According to the Ringling Museum, “The Annunciation represents the angel Gabriel's announcement to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and give birth to the Son of God, who will be called 'Jesus' (Luke 1:25-38).” Much like many paintings from the Baroque period, this painting is characterized by exaggerated movement, exuberance, and clear details used to create a dramatic effect on the viewer. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I really hope to return soon.
