Topic > The Argument for Cognitive Restructuring of Experience to Prevent Deviant Behavior

There are numerous examples of scenarios that would fall under the purview of effort theory, but for the purposes of this discussion I have chosen a specific one to use in this case. I decided to go with a young, ambitious graduate student who didn't get into the graduate school he'd always wanted to go to. All their lives they have dreamed of attending this school. Therefore, not being accepted would be detrimental to their mental health and behavior. Not getting into your dream school can be a major source of tension in your life. The harmful stimuli in that individual's life appear to be his parents, who were once his greatest supporter. But now they put too much pressure on the young student. The removal of stimuli evaluated positively is found both in the failure to enter the school they wanted and in the fact that parents, once supportive, turn into disappointed and ashamed parents. But after the introduction of these stressors, they would be more prone to criminal or deviant behavior. These stressors introduced into their lives make them more open to committing acts of criminal behavior. They would be infinitely more likely to want to or actually commit these previously unacceptable acts of behavior. Before they would have been completely put off by this type of behavior, but now they are very open to it. Now they would actually consider committing these criminal acts, whereas before they would never have even considered the idea. Cognitive restructuring may be absolutely imperative to prevent future deviant behavior. Psychologists should reframe the way the person thinks to prevent them from committing this type of behavior. Reshaping the way they think would almost eliminate these stressors from their life, they wouldn't be a big deal in the individual's mind. These would be almost trivial matters, in which case they would no longer lead them to a life of criminal behavior. It would be one of the only ways to prevent this individual from engaging in deviant behavior in the future. Without the use of cognitive restructuring this individual could turn into a greedy criminal. It could protect our society from dangerous and deviant acts that this person has the potential to commit.
