This political cartoon shows the House Un-American Activities Committee driving recklessly through the streets, obviously not bothering to hit people. The chaos is evident, the face with all the papers flying everywhere, the parking meters falling and the general looks of terror from people. This cartoon attempts to demonstrate that Joseph McCarthy's committee was wreaking havoc on the American population and would stop at nothing. This appears to be true, as it was around this time that McCarthy began to accuse certain individuals in Hollywood (writers, directors, actors, etc.). He was directly attacking American icons known throughout the world. Some of the people accused of being communists included Charlie Chaplin, Arthur Miller, Langston Hughes, and Orson Welles. This is analogous to the book The Crucible, because in the book when the court began accusing several highly respectable people such as Rebecca Nurse, Martha Corey, and John Proctor for witchcraft and had them hanged. This scared a lot of people because these are people that citizens respected and admired, who were well-liked and had influence in the city. Reverend Parris is worried that if they were hanged, the citizens would riot and overthrow the courts. He has already seen the city turn against him; that morning he found a knife stuck in his door.
