I was happy to have this great opportunity to be involved in an institution that works to serve and support our local community. After connecting with the volunteer coordinator, Jessica Jarvis, I was scheduled to work at the food pantry every Tuesday. I was helping sort food, check expiration dates, and keep the pantry clean and organized. The tasks I was given were simple and fun. I also engaged with those who shopped at the food bank, helping them fill shopping carts that were not only nutritionally balanced, but also met their family's needs. From this experience I learned how to work as a member of a team and communicate with others I was unfamiliar with. To my surprise, after my second time volunteering, the manager offered me the supervisor opportunity, working two days a week. This took me back to the time when I moved to America 15 years ago and my only chance to set foot in the local library I wanted to work at was to volunteer. Volunteering made me a stronger candidate and I was hired after 3 months of working as a shelf assistant. I was soon promoted to Senior Library Assistant and stayed with the company for another 5 years. Most of the time the terminologies; volunteering, community service and service learning become interconnected and confusing for people. Unquestionably, they have overlapping characteristics whereby it can often appear similar. Volunteerism is the contribution of time, effort, and talent to a cause or mission without financial gain, while people who perform community service are usually assigned by the schools or courts they serve. to ensure they meet the requirements of their assignment. Volunteering and community service can give you the opportunity to try something new, gain experience, develop skills, improve your career prospects, gain confidence and meet new people. It also helps develop civic and social responsibility skills and helps you become more aware of community needs. Service-learning is a combination of studying and volunteering at the same time. It also combines community service with the school curriculum, benefiting both the community and the classroom. By pairing community engagement with classroom learning, service-learning also increases the likelihood that students will gain a better understanding of social issues and learn to empower disadvantaged communities.
