In this week's readings, we encountered the book "The Red Indians" by Peter Kulchyski which reveals the struggles and resistance of First Nations peoples to maintain their land and identity that European settlers were trying to take away. The author tells us through the resistance of the native peoples of Canada to the capitalist way of governing. By conquering their lands using their resources and taking advantage of their generosity, tranquility and naivety, the European invaders represented the First Nations in a way absolutely opposite to what they are, describing them as barbaric, "bloodthirsty savages", ruthless and ferocious . by Amergigo Despucci in his writings, and all these distortions illustrated an image and stereotypes that affected American Indians as a population characterized as lawless, without religion and without government. As a foreigner in Canada, I did not know the history, culture and identities of Aboriginal people, I was not aware of the struggles, constraints and all the battles they had to endure just to defeat what has always been theirs: land, identity and resources . .Say no to plagiarism. Get an Original Essay After being able to see the real side of the "discoveries" and how the "explorers" were described as forgiving and friendly settlers who established friendship with the Indians and wanted to trade with them, the book reveals the real impact of their invasion and how soon after occupying North American land, the Indians were affected by their policies and the colonists' abduction of their resources. Soon after settling in what is now Canada and America, they began to impose declarative acts and policies and all concerned the occupation of territories, which they presented as negotiations aimed at exchanging lands and granting use of the resources of the Indians who in return gave them free healthcare, protection, pay them and also allow them to have access to their hunting resources just like before their invasion. The colonization of Canada occurred with the Royal Proclamation Act of 1763, recognized by name in the Canadian Constitution Act of 1982. These acts were established to establish that Natives have the right to possess “all the lands and territories lying in the West” . of the sources of the rivers that fall into the sea from the west and north-west and must be reserved for the Aboriginal people and cannot be taken away from them” but when the government started offering promises, negotiations made through treaties, many times they were broken and exposed in a way which usually benefits the government and irritates the Indians. The author clearly states that the aborigines were used by the settlers for the labor and hunting work they possessed, and all this hunting and fur export was very profitable therefore the Indians were very useful and beneficial and it was the Europeans who depended on the Peoples natives. The numbered treaties that the government negotiated between 1870 and 1921 whose purpose was to respect the land rights of Native peoples and to recognize that they had title to their land and could be surrendered or ceded through negotiations with the government and that they would be paid, written treaties differed in what the government and the natives negotiated about verbally, and since the natives were unable to write and read, the government enforced the treaties in a way where the natives would lose their territories and their titles. It's amazing how in this case “people of one culture used their own rules to tell people of another what rights they have,” what lands they will occupy and how to build them..
