We All Fall Down by Robert Cormier is a complicated book. It's set in Wickburge and Burnside, Massachusetts, in the 1980s or 1990s. It is narrated by three different people in the first person. One of these people is Jane Jerome, a 15-year-old girl who lives in a house destroyed by four people. His sister fell into a coma after being thrown down a flight of stairs by trashy Harry Flowers. Another narrator was Mickey Stallings, aka The Avenger. The Avenger's age is 11, but Mickey is 41. This doesn't make sense to me, but when Mickey killed Vaughn Matterson, he became the Avenger. He saw the whole mess and that's what started The Avenger. After it was all over, he said he would avenge the house. The Avenger plays an important role in this book and is my favorite character. The last narrator is Buddy Walker. Buddy is trash. He was drunk at the time but was there and didn't stop the trash from happening. The three characters all end up having something to do with the trash, Buddy; that was trashy, Jane; who lived in the destroyed house and Mickey Mouse; who was the only witness to the trashing. Jane and Buddy both feel that they are the perfect people for each other. They start to go out. Buddy feels weird around her sometimes because he knows that sooner or later she will find out about him and his involvement in the trash can. One day, Mickey saw Jane and Buddy together and remembered that Buddy was a scruffy guy. The next day Mickey paid Amos Dalton ten dollars to take Jane to a shack, so Mickey had her tied up and planned to kill her. He was enraged and explains to her how he saw Buddy and that he killed Vaughn Matterson and how that made him the Avenger. Jane convinced Mickey that he was the one who killed his grandfather and that he was the one who was in that room, not the 11-year-old avenger. This makes him realize that he was committing the murder and he slit his wrists and died. Buddy found out about the incident with Mickey and Jane, he tried calling her several times but couldn't reach her. When she finally called him, she was thrilled to hear his voice again. She told him to meet her at her house, and he did. When he opened the door he knew it was over, she knew it. His efforts to keep the relationship together failed and he left the house with his head down. About a week later, evil Harry Flowers called Jane. He told her that yes, Buddy was with him but he was drunk and that when Buddy's parents separated he took advantage of him. He said all this because he said I owe him this call. He hung up the phone. Three months later Buddy meets Jane by chance in the mall and the voice changes to third person. They met face to face and spoke calmly. Jane said she had to leave and Buddy, in his depressed state, said it was lovely there for a while, wasn't it, Jane? and she replied Was that so? and there the book ends.
