My day started like any other normal day. I got up at 6:45, got ready and went to school. As usual, school ended at 2pm and my shift started at 4pm. My role at Starbucks was that of a barista and my job, in addition to making coffee, was to always put customers first and ensure that were satisfied and treated fairly in the store. As I was taking orders and my colleague was completing them, I noticed a man come in from the back of the line. He seemed a little lost and immersed in his own world, but I didn't think much of it and continued working on the line. As the line got smaller, the man approached me, but for some reason my colleague felt uncomfortable. When I started talking to the man he showed no sign of understanding me. Then I realized he was deaf and couldn't communicate with me. It was the first time I had met this deaf man, but my colleague had evidently met him before because he immediately expressed great disapproval of the situation. My colleague has dealt with him before, but he is also agitated because he always comes in and can never communicate with him, according to my colleague at the time. My coworker kept telling me to leave him alone and not try to help him, but I knew that was the wrong thing to do. I immediately took my phone, opened the notes section and handed it to the deaf man so he could write down his request, but he refused. I was a little shocked as to why he refused to write it down, but I didn't give up and grabbed a notepad and pen. The deaf man grabbed his pen and notebook and wrote while my colleague yelled at me to leave him alone and let him go. I calmly told my colleague that he should go into the back room and relax while I handled the situation because I wanted to help the deaf man. I knew that if I left him there, he would feel betrayed by me and leaving him without help would be against my morals and integrity. Luckily, the customers did not come during my interaction and I was able to help the deaf man. It turned out he wanted directions to a local supermarket, which I was able to show him by pointing and Google Maps. Seeing him shake my hand and walk out the door smiling left an image painted in my head forever. I feel proud for what I did, being able to block my rude colleague and instead use integrity and choose to do the right thing by helping the deaf man. Even though I've never interacted with him, or any deaf person before in my life, it was nice to accomplish something like this. This had a great impact on the deaf man because I showed him kindness while others, like my colleague, did not. This showed him that people still care about him and are willing to help him regardless of his circumstances. Being able to look beyond my parents' dislike.
