India has been plagued by caste system for a long time now. The caste system in India is a much stricter version of how the United States views classes such as the upper class, the middle class, and the lower class. While in America what class you are in doesn't necessarily matter, your caste in India determines what food you eat and who you marry. There are many people who are in favor of eliminating the caste system. Abolishing the caste system in India would lead to many positive outcomes through the elimination of favoritism, the power of freedom of choice and the end of toleration of corrupt police. The Untouchables, or Dalits, are India's underclass. Untouchables are treated with disrespect and considered slaves not worth living. Some people find even looking at Dalits impure. Apart from the hatred that Dalits receive, there are also many horrible crimes against them. Some statistics are disconcerting. If the caste system was removed, marriage would not have to depend on castes, and this could also decrease hate crimes because if If a Dalit and a Brahmin get married, hate crimes would be less if two different castes were involved because there is only one Dalit involved in the marriage. Furthermore, it is well known that when someone has more freedom, their quality of life is better. With the removal of the caste system, it would be much easier for India to be safer and more pleasant for Dalits, Brahmins and Kshatriyas. With the abolition of the caste system, police favoritism will no longer be tolerated at any level. Everyone will be equal, so any form of favoritism will be strictly prohibited. If there were still favoritism, it would create a stir because while now no one is equal with the caste system, everyone will be and police officers would be accused of discrimination. According to Hillary Mayell, “26 police officers have been convicted in court for filing cases of murder, torture, etc.” In one year, 68,160 complaints were filed regarding various acts, from murder to robbery, and 62% of cases were closed. Of all the cases closed and all the murders ignored, only 26 police officers were charged. Mayell is trying to point out that people are overlooking the abuses that Dalits suffer from.
