The explicit curriculum constitutes the formal educational structure of the program and includes the courses and field training used for each of the program options. Generalist practice is used in the liberal arts and person-in-environment framework. To promote social and human well-being, generalist practitioners use a variety of intervention and prevention methods in their practice with individuals, families, groups and communities. The generalist professional applies ethical principles and critical thinking at a micro and macro level in practice. Specialized practice builds on generalist practice. Specialized practice extends social work values, skills and knowledge to assess and intervene within an area of specialization. Implicit curriculum refers to the learning environment in which explicit curriculum is presented. The implicit curriculum consists of the following elements: the program's commitment to diversity; admissions, policies and procedures; counseling, retention and resolution policies; student participation in governance; faculty; administrative structure; and resources.
