The center of the ancient Mayan empire was located in the geographical area of present-day Guatemala. The Maya reached the height of their power around the 6th century AD and were known for their extraordinary architecture, their Mayan calendar system, and the intricate symbolic form of writing called hieroglyphics. The Maya were the creators of gigantic and fascinating stone cities that still exist today in Central America. These cities were abandoned by the Mayan civilization around 900 AD and since then scholars have debated the reasons for the decline of this fascinating and powerful empire. The Mayan civilization was one of the most dominant indigenous societies that Mesoamerica has ever hosted; How did such a large and powerful corporation decline and disappear? But here's the problem: there was simply no evidence of the Maya's decline. One day the most powerful civilization of the ancient world was no longer there, it disappeared. People think, after researching for many, many years, that there were many things within the empire that changed, but they can't find a reason big enough for an entire civilization to vanish. Overpopulation was said to be becoming a problem, frequent skirmishes with neighboring warring clans supposedly forced some Maya to leave their cities, and, perhaps the main reason, game in the area severely declined and food was difficult to find. I suppose without food it would be difficult to maintain a civilization. Unfortunately, I'm no closer to finding an answer than I was when I asked the same question in the first paragraph. I've done a lot of research and I just can't find an answer to this unsolved mystery. The Maya were a people who seemed to act together. They were imaginative and ingenious in many ways. Inventions such as observatories were created by the Mayans and are still used today, perhaps slightly updated, but still created by the might of the ancient world. These people were wise well beyond their years and it is completely and utterly fascinating. They invented forms of natural medicines, enhanced the characteristics of their children when they were born to create resources they believed their children would need to survive in this world. They were also one of the first people to experiment with hallucinogenic drugs. During the day, the drugs were used as painkillers in healing, and in the evening they were used in their religious rituals. For all these reasons, the Maya were considered an intelligent culture, which would lead us to believe that insanely strange events had to occur for such a culture to develop.
