World War II was a large-scale war around the war that lasted 6 years. The war was devastating for all countries involved on both sides. There were a considerable number of deaths in World War II, estimated at 15,000,000 battle-related deaths. There were many different battles in World War II, but today I will talk about one of the largest battles near the end of the war. This battle is known as the Battle of the Bulge. The Battle of the Bulge began on December 16, 1944. It began with Hitler ordering a major surprise attack against the Western Allies using his 3 armies. The Germans emerged from the dense forests of the Ardennes in Belgium. At the beginning of the battle the Germans were winning due to the nature of the surprise attack and their level of experience. The damage they caused was so great that it created a sort of "bulge" on the Allied front, hence the name of the battle. But later we will see that the Germans' progress at the beginning of the battle will be short-lived. The BOTB was not that long a battle, but the significance of the battle was great. It lasted only from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945. It lasted about 40 days. But there was a lot of fighting in this 40-day period, due to the numerous battles within it. Such as the attack of the 6th Panzer Army, the St.Vith attacks and the Battle of Bastogne. Several countries were involved in all the fighting. The countries involved in the fighting were Germany, Great Britain, the United States and France. Although most of the fighting occurred between the United States and Germany, it was a surprise attack. Hitler planned this surprise attack to divide the Allies. It was his last offensive attempt in World War II... mid-paper... but it also has significance because of the effect it had on the people who witnessed it. Veterans told stories of the unimaginable horrors they saw while fighting the battle. Clearly in this article as I talk about all the things the Allies did to the Germans one can infer that the Allies did in fact win, which they did. Hitler thought that this surprise attack would be a great victory for the Germans. Hitler's plan was to cut off their supplies, but things didn't go at all as he planned. At first the surprise attack worked on the Allies, they continued to fight and finally won this battle. Germany was severely weakened by the fact that it did not have enough fuel and by the fact that the Allies had killed many of their experienced soldiers. In all this hard battle the Allies won and it was a great victory for them.
