Machismo is a Latin American ideology in which men are superior to women. Trujillo used machismo throughout his regime to distinguish himself from others. Trujillo had a very interesting nickname that kind of indicates how he felt about himself and how that helped his ego and machismo; the nickname was the Spanish word Tigre. Trujillo almost aimlessly reached the pinnacle of his tigueraje with political control, using violence, courage, athletic build and with his virility he even gained the nickname tiger rooster. Machismo is in many ways different in the Dominican Republic than in different Latin American countries; they usually have the same base but a different structure. For example, a father was a distant figure who never actually raised a child, instead, the father was ultimately represented by the daughter. Trujillo used the power he had acquired from a macho man by changing the divorce laws.
