Quoted by the only old man who keeps all the memories of years and years gone by to give to the new Receiver, who is Jonas. It's not just the happiness of past memories that lasts a lifetime. But pain is the biggest part of memory that anyone will have to endure. It is not just the mental pain that we suffer, it could also be physical and mental pain that the elder has had to be tortured with throughout his life. Lois Lowry is a powerful writer who inflicts and teaches in everyone's mind how important and delicate memory is in the novel, The Giver, and how it must not be forgotten or faded as it will determine our future and fill the gaps of mistakes that individuals make
