Paper #3CONSPIRACY is based on the only surviving documentation of a German meeting that took place in the midst of World War II. The meeting was held to determine what the Germans would do with the many Jews Germany held captive. The solution of the meetings would be the blueprint for Hitler's Final Solution. The film which is the subject of this article; CONSPIRACY is set in 1942, precisely on January 20th. The film was written by Loring Mandel and directed by Frank Pierson. The film was released on May 19, 2001. The main objective of this film is to tell the story of this encounter that would determine the fate of six million lives. This meeting was attended by fifteen different German officials, from SS commanders to various government ministers. . The meeting took place on the outskirts of Berlin in a house owned by the leader of the meeting, SS security chief Reinhard Heydrich. The fifteen different men were invited to what they thought would be a polite conference with food, wine, cigars and some debate, but little did they know that the reasons for the meeting were ill-intentioned. When the men first entered the house; after a few rounds of “Hail Hitler,” attendees sat around a long, round conference table. First everyone introduced themselves: SS Maj. Gen. Heinrich Muller, Dr. Gerhard Klopfer, Dr. Willhelm Kritzinger, SS Lt. Gen. Otto Hoffman, Dr. Georg Leibbrant, Dr. Alfred Meyer, Dr. Willhelm Stuckart, Undersecretary Martin Luther, Erich Neumann, Rudolph Lange, Dr. Joseph Buhler, SS Colonel Eberhard Schongarth, Dr. Roland Freisler, along with Eichmann and Heydrich. After introducing themselves, these fifteen men were all invited to open the files which had been placed on the table in front of... in the center of the paper... the only surviving document which was Undersecretary Martin Luther's copy of the Wannsee Conference Minutes , which were discovered in the archives of the German Foreign Office by American investigators in 1947. The only things that are not entirely accurate are the seating arrangements at the table, what they were actually served for lunch, and who wore uniform and who did not. In conclusion, writer Loring Mandel and director Frank Pierson have put together a very good film. The film has a very well put together cast with Kenneth Branagh, Stanley Tucci and many co-stars. The actors were very believable in their characters, which helps draw the viewer into the story. The film has a very clear thesis that is set up and supported very well in detail. It is very realistic in telling the events and doesn't add a "Hollywood twist" to the story.
