The History of Psychological AssessmentAccording to Jane Framingham "Psychological assessment is a testing process that uses a combination of techniques to help arrive at some hypotheses about a person and their behavior, personality and capacity." (2011) However it has evolved a lot over time. Much progress has been made to get this assessment to where it is today. Over time, many new discoveries and experiments have occurred. Many people have contributed to the advancement of psychological evaluation. Several discoveries have been made about how the mind can work and what exactly it can reveal. It is never just a number or a test that defines a person. Before formulating any type of hypothesis, a series of tests are carried out. A mental testing hypothesis turned into tests that are used around the world to find out your behavior. A hypothesis of intelligence transformed into a way to distinguish learning disabilities and standardized tests to access university. The people in this essay fed on an idea, expanded their knowledge, and improved the ideas of others. Letting their idea be revised and improved in the years to come. According to Robert Gregory in his book “History of Psychological Testing” many people believe that the beginning of these tests began in Germany and Great Britain in the late 1800s. Wilhelm Wundt founded the first psychological laboratory in 1879 in Leipzig, Germany. One of his first tests was the thought meter in 1862. His experiment involved a pendulum with needles protruding from the sides. The observer's goal was to remember where the position of the pendulum was when the bell rang. He believed that the actual position compared to the notated position of the pendulum from the center of the paper (...some revision). Many believe that these types of tests are unnecessary due to the technology we have today. Technologies such as computers and monitors are interpreted much more in new psychological assessments to check heart rate and copy brain waves. Although, even today, to be able to make a correct psychological diagnosis it is necessary to go deeper than the scientific part. Psychological assessments will continue to evolve. Theories will continue to be made. There is still so much unknown about the mind, the emotional sphere, and the areas that drive people to act a certain way. The Psychological Assessment is never based on just one test or number, there is always a series of tests to consider. The evaluation can highlight weaknesses, but it also highlights a strength.
