There are many things included in the original Little Mermaid that most people today would be shocked by. I mean, isn't it hard to believe that the Little Mermaid will never marry the prince, but rather fall into the sea and turn into foam? There are many different things in Disney's new version of The Little Mermaid that were hidden in Hans Christian Andersen's original story. From Ariel's personality to her way of life, both of these versions are indeed very different from each other. In Hans Christian Andersen's version, the Little Mermaid grew up very shy and curious. She wanted a different body and wasn't as happy in hers. The Little Mermaid was in a sense searching for her "immortal soul", and the Little Mermaid's family encourages her and her grandmother helps her to be able to do that. Her sisters helped her find the prince and also find out more information about him. They traveled to the surface with her to see for herself, and each of them strongly encouraged her to go and look for him. Her sisters also helped her find out where she lived. In the Disney version, Ariel was forbidden from visiting and seeing humans. Ariel's father believed that humans were dangerous and even assigned someone to keep an eye on her. Most of the time, Ariel just went looking for treasure underwater in sunken ships and treasure chests, but one time she went to the surface. Every time his father found out, he got angry. Her father didn't want to see or hear that Ariel had gone to the surface to talk to or see other humans again. Even with these rules, however, Ariel continued to swim until the end. In Hans Christian Andersen's version, the prince fails to fall in love with the Little Mermaid. «And he loved her as one loves a small child. The thought of making her his wife never occurred to him. (Andersen, 1837) However, if he had never loved or married her, she would never have received an immortal soul nor would she have been able to become a mermaid again. If he were to marry another, she would die of a broken heart and turn into sea foam. The prince's parents did not want him to marry anyone other than another princess. The prince told the Little Mermaid that if he could choose who to marry, he would choose the young girl who saved him from the shipwreck. At this point the prince did not know that the young girl was the Little Mermaid and did not say so
