Death is present at the moment of everyone's death. The result of this is that Death witnessed the most traumatic events in history, particularly the First World War. Using Death as a narrator, Markus Zusak offers the reader a unique perspective in The Book Thief. Describing things from his unique, war-weary perspective, Death unconsciously begins to reveal that he suffers from PTSD. One of the most obvious symptoms that Death shows is re-experiencing, he sees things that make him remember his past traumatic experiences. The next symptom of the manifestation of death is depression. The last symptom shown by Death is the lack of personality, which Death shows by often forgetting that he cannot interact with the human world. Death's PTSD becomes more apparent as the story progresses. The most recurring symptom that Death shows is re-experiencing, he often shows these symptoms because he focuses on things that remind him of traumatic events. When Max is in the basement drawing Liesel's weather forecast on the wall, Death describes the sun he drew as "that dripping sun" (249). The word drip is a strange way of describing the sun, this leads to the conclusion that the sun's rays remind Death of blood. Dripping blood would have been a very common sight in a war like World War I, where many soldiers died from blood loss and where Death would have been very active. These visions of dripping blood would traumatize Death and help contribute to his PTSD. After Liesel told Mom about being fired by the governor, Mom took out the spoon to punish Liesel. But after Liesel explained the situation to her, Mom said she understood and told Liesel to go to her room. As Liesel left the room she “could hear the wooden spoons click into place in the metal jar… in the center of the paper… er, a unique perspective. Providing Death PTSD allows the reader to connect on a more personal level with the book. The recurring memories of death of all the death he has experienced make him seem more human because every day humans are reminded of things just by looking at something, because this is part of being human, our memory. Death depression adds another thing that is recognizable because depression is something that millions of people suffer from every year, this shows that death is emotionally similar to humans. When Death shows a lack of personality, it connects with the reader because most of the people who read this book will be teenagers, who traditionally have trouble finding themselves. The whole point of this death PTSD was to give the reader something to relate to and to show that he had emotions and was the cold and cruel Grim Reaper that he was made out to be..
