Research indicates that “specification of fetal brain areas affected by prenatal exposure to maternal distress and suboptimal nutrition will identify, in part, developmental processes, such as synaptic plasticity , neurogenesis, and dendritic arborization, as they are vulnerable to the influences of these two maternal factors” (Monk, Georgieff and Osterholm, 2013). Interestingly, the vitamins and nutrients that a mother eats provide the baby with vitamins and nutrients. Psychologist Martha May Reynolds wrote: “Nutrition science has conducted careful studies of nutritional needs during pregnancy, and the results are now available to virtually all expectant mothers. Calcium is especially important in the formation of the baby's bones and teeth, while other minerals, vitamins and proteins help nourish the developing embryo. The present and future health of both the child and the mother depends on the mother's well-balanced diet” (Reynolds, 1939). Seemingly insignificant and something people take for granted, eating healthy foods is essential for present and future health
