A current example includes the 10-year-old boy released by his captor after singing a gospel song for hours. In Mark Twain's Personal Memoirs of Joan of Arc, Joan Arc, a teenage French military commander shows faith every time she goes into battle or is about to face death. She is eventually captured, and even though she dies, she continues to maintain her faith in God. By showing the effects of faith on Joan of Arc and her companions, Mark Twain illustrates his belief that the value of intense personal faith is important in everyone's life. Twain first describes the importance of faith when Joan of Arc is afraid of what the English will do to France. Speaking to the priest, Giovanna says that “…I believe in the Christian faith and that God has redeemed us from the fires of hell…” (64).
