The Purpose of Education Throughout my years of education, I have often wondered what the goals of many of my lessons had been. Now, as I prepare to enter the teaching field, I am reevaluating why we need to educate children. I believe that some of the main purposes of education, beyond the obvious purpose of acquiring knowledge, are to teach about our culture, develop social skills, refine the use of our language, and develop problem solving and logical reasoning skills. These are all important parts of our daily lives that are passed on through the many things we accomplish during our education. Learning culture through education is an important part of our learning experiences. Before a child goes to school, he or she is only introduced to the culture that his or her family is a part of. By going to school you see the general accepted norms, not only at school, but in the world of work and in daily life outside the home. While some children may constantly be the center of attention at home, at school they learn that they can't always be the center of everyone's attention. It also teaches children responsibility and that if they don't do what they're asked, there will be consequences. Developing social skills is an incredibly important part of a student's education.
