James Hunter uses graphs to represent the percentages of young people who think certain immoral acts are acceptable. When it comes to theft, cheating, premarital sex, and even suicide, a high percentage of young people say they would participate in it or at least justify it (165). Those with theistic orientations had the lowest percentages, but even these numbers can be shocking to the Christian with a good sense of moral values. As William Watkins explains, today's society has moved away from the “old absolutes” that “guided us forward” (235) and developed “new absolutes” that “did no such thing. If anything, the new absolutes have brought us misery – individually and collectively” (235). For example, in matters of marriage, the old absolute says that marriage is "ordained by God and occurs between a man and a woman until death severs the bond" (89). The new (and more widely accepted) absolute rule states that marriage is simply a contract between any two people that can be terminated by either person for any reason (89). Divorce rates are higher than ever and affecting families nationwide. Marriages between a man and a woman are destined to last, for the good of both the couple and any children. Another absolute created by society states that there is value in human life
