The All-American Meal requires Americans to do more than meets the eye. Eric Schlosser's book Fast Food Nation delves into the intricate workings of the fast food industry to expose the mistreatment and cruelty of industry workers, just as Upton Sinclair did in the early 1900s regarding the packaging industry of the meat. Schlosser is able to bring light to the darkness behind the all-American meal through extensive research and personal comparisons for which he has high regard. Fast Food Nation is a good literary nonfiction book due to the use of relevant anecdotes that allow the reader to connect with the working conditions associated with fast food and provide a new perspective on the topic of fast food. Schlosser develops an argument using the above criteria to argue that the fast food industry neglects the health of workers and consumers in order to capture a larger profit margin and a broader consumer demographic. Eric Schlosser is a well-known investigative journalist who delves into “topics ignored by the mainstream media and gives voice to people on the margins of society” (Eric Schlosser). Before being an investigative journalist, Schlosser was a playwright and had a couple of his plays performed at London (Eric Schlosser) Schlosser has won a few awards including the National Magazine Award and the Sidney Hillman Foundation Award for Reporting (Fast Food Nation), however he is not a self-promoting author by nature and has no desire for fame like many others.
