Kinship and MarriageThe definition of marriage ranges from one cultural point of view to another, and in our culture it means the union of a man and a wife, but this is also changing over time. Marriage serves many purposes for people who get married and their families. Being Sikh, and more specifically Punjabi, marriage plays a very important role in our society and is very different from the marriage depicted in Yano and Dobe societies. These three societies may be very different from each other, but they all have a religion in their society, and I think they may have more in common regarding marriage, even though they may seem very different. Marriage can be portrayed very differently in different societies, but the more you compare it to other cultures, the more similarities you will find. The purpose of this essay is to show the similarities between the three different societies and understand why our definition of marriage is different but the underlying reasons and purposes of marriage remain the same. In Indian societies marriage is often only between one man and one woman, and there have been polygynous marriages in the past, but those were mostly permitted and limited to royalty. Today, Indian societies practice arranged marriages because they tend to be beneficial to families and the individuals who marry. The divorce rate in India is very low compared to that of the United States, the United States has a divorce rate of 50%, while that of India is 1.1%. One of the reasons why the divorce rate in India is lower than that of the United States is because divorce in India is looked down upon and is considered a very bad thing, especially for women. Even if a person has marital problems, they are expected to overcome them because if it's not their fa... middle of paper... each for their own purposes, and they have limitations on who you can and cannot marry. While these are just a few of the many similarities I've found when comparing these three different companies, I've come to realize that these companies are more similar than they seem. The similarities found within each of these societies, traditions and marriage patterns can be traced back five thousand years and all come from one central geographic area. But although everyone evolves from an idea, as time passed and geography changed, people moved, different cultures were introduced and incorporated into cultures, the more the idea and concept of marriage changed, but the central concept still remain the same cross culturally. Marriage is still known to be the union of a culturally cross-bred man and woman, or rather, in most cultures.
