As technology has evolved, so has our way of life. In a way it brought us closer, but at the same time it separated us. For example, cell phones and computers were not as advanced as they are today. So they weren't as important as they are now. Technology has made us a less independent people, but it allows us to know what is happening in the world. We as people are more connected and have expanded our intelligence through technology. People, companies and institutions are feeling the depth of this technological change, but the speed and scope of the transformation has triggered all sorts of utopian and dystopian perceptions that, when carefully examined through methodologically rigorous empirical research, are found to be inaccurate. For example, the media often reports that heavy Internet use increases the risk of isolation, alienation and withdrawal from society, but available evidence shows that the Internet does not isolate people or reduce their sociability; indeed, it increases sociability, civic commitment and, in general, the intensity of family and friendship relationships
