Tehran has a long and storied past as the capital of the Seljuk empire, a powerful mercantile city, the seat of power of the Qajar dynasty, and ultimately the largest city and capital of Iran. It has probably undergone many metamorphoses in culture, urban planning and societies (Birch). Yet today more than ever, a change is taking place that risks erasing what existed before. Tehran has very few protected buildings within its borders and as such much of the city has already seen redevelopment and “upgrading” and this pace will likely continue to accelerate as Western culture continues its unstoppable conversion of the globe.
