Topic > Eating Disorders Case Study - 948

Results of the study, zero point three percent of young people were affected by anorexia, zero point nine percent by bulimia and one point six percent by binge eating disorders . (Collins, M.E. 2013). Many people think that if you eat well and exercise, an eating disorder won't be a problem. An eating disorder is something serious and needs to be treated. If not in the right way, it can really destroy you inside and out. Without treatment, severe mood swings, physical problems, and potential death can occur (Renner, J. 2001). Ultimately, if you can, get treatment for any ailment you may have. In this case, what are the solutions to help people with eating disorders? Is there a treatment you can get? Also, how many types of disorders are there? Types of Eating Disorders There are about three types of eating disorders, which have a problem with weight, food, or emotions. Anorexia is a disorder in which it is self-starvation that causes the victim to experience extreme weight loss (Insel, T. 2014, February 19). Here are some warning signs and health consequences that are easy to notice. Anorexia occurs when a person loses a good amount of weight and still wants to lose a little more. This disorder will lead you to deny food when you are really hungry. Additionally, the victim may be concerned about food, calories, fat grams, diet, and even their weight. When you starve there are health consequences, as if your body is not getting the nutrients it needs to function properly, so you are slowly destroying your body (Renner, J. 2001). A second type of disorder is Bulimia Nervosa, which is where you consume a large amount of food and vomits it. The statistic of this disorder is that 80% of women are affected and these are feelings that can seem overwhelming. For example, starving is a way for people with anorexia to feel more in control of their lives and to relieve tension, anger and anxiety. Purging and other behaviors aimed at preventing weight gain are ways that people with bulimia can feel more in control of their lives and relieve stress and anxiety (Lee, N.2013, April 20). One celebrity quoted, "I wish I could tell everyone who suffers from an eating disorder, or who has harmed themselves in any way, that they are worthy of life and have meaning. You can overcome and overcome anything" Demi Lovato ( Fast, B 2013). Demi Lovato is right, you can overcome anything as long as you believe in yourself, seek help if you need it and accept the fact that there is a problem that needs to be solved. There are people out there willing to help you, not just this, get the help you need and get better.
