I have to remember to stay away from double-barrelled questions. I also need to avoid using questions that begin with “have” and “are.” When interviewing clients, I should focus on using open-ended questions to allow the client to tell their story in their own way and minimize the use of closed-ended questions unless they are necessary to obtain specific information . Another skill that needs improvement is the use of active listening. Every client and every situation is different, and although we have practiced our skills in a conference room with other students and found it difficult to concentrate, there may be times as a social worker where I may find myself in a noisy atmosphere and need to practice eliminating background noise to hear what my client is revealing. The use of professional language also represented something of a challenge for me. It was difficult trying to retrain my brain to say the term sexual assault survivor when I was referring to them as victims of sexual abuse. However, I am eager to provide my colleagues with up-to-date knowledge on professional terminology and incorporate it into my daily life
