Victims of Domestic Violence People today must recognize the importance of domestic violence. There are so many women who are physically abused and even killed every year. Women need to protect themselves more and stop going back to the abuser. Authorities and justice systems should be tougher on men to prevent domestic violence against women; there are so many men in this country who get away with it because women are afraid to ask for help and feel like prisoners. According to Ornelas there are three main types of abuse; physical, emotional and verbal. Examples of physical abuse are when the abuser slaps, kicks, chokes, and punches. Emotional abuse involves mind games, jealousy, isolation from friends and family, and making the victim feel worthless (Ornelas). Verbal abuse consists of constant yelling, humiliation and threats. A woman in love will do whatever it takes to have a relationship with the person she loves, which makes it even harder for her to walk away when abuse is involved. Sometimes it is very difficult for a woman to recognize the abuse because she is so in love with her partner. It is very important to recognize patterns of abuse and domestic violence. All women should take signs of abuse very seriously. When women begin to see these signs of abuse, they need to leave or ask for help and not stay with the abuser. There are many places women can go for protection, such as shelters and many support groups. Educating women about cycles of domestic violence can decrease cases in the county. Support groups can also break an abused woman's silence and she will be able to speak out in front of a group of other victims. These groups make women feel that the...... middle of paper......s. Many things are said today about how children witness violence in homes and as they get older they join gangs, take drugs and treat others disrespectfully. Today there are many support groups and living environments where victims and children can go. It is never too late to teach children that domestic abuse is not acceptable. There are studies that show that 85% of victims of domestic violence are women, it is proven that women suffer more violence than men. When there are married couples, the women have experienced some kind of violence within the marriage after the honeymoon phase. There are married couples who have suffered more domestic violence than boyfriend and girlfriend. There are high rates of unreported cases in the county because many women don't know where and what to do to get the help they need to get away from their abuser.
