The Pros and Cons of Medi-Cal Budget Cuts About five years ago, my doctor told me I was a type 2 diabetic. As a result , I have experienced a number of other health problems due to diabetes. My vision has worsened and I have frequent toothaches. I recently couldn't get treatment from a dentist for my serious dental problem. I had apses on the top and bottom of my mouth. As a result, I missed numerous days of class and my instructors all but kicked me out of class. Even though I received an apology from my GP, this does not make up for the classes I missed due to my failure to attend their classes. I couldn't afford treatment for the mouth infection at any dental office, so I was in pain for days. Unfortunately, Medi-Cal will only pay for dental exams and tooth abstractions, but no other treatments. Optometric treatments are also limited to the cost of one exam only. I understand that California needs to balance the state budget, but limiting and easing Medi-Cal coverage for low-income adults such as dental and optometry in order to restore the state budget is not the solution. Additionally, the ability to afford dental and optometric care for low-income adults in California may not be achievable, especially when we consider family size combined with a family's annual income. Additionally, Medi-Cal is a government assistance program that covers the cost of care for low-income families who cannot afford care. Now the government has decided that the service is no longer essential for low-income adults. Instead, the cost of dental and vision care is essential only for low-income children.
