The Galápagos IslandsIn 2012, more than one hundred and seventy thousand people visited the Galápagos Islands. It is the most famous wildlife viewing destination in the world. However, these islands are not only rich in exotic animal species, but also contain a history that has become essential to the theory of evolution. The Galápagos Islands are more than a popular tourist attraction; they are nineteen islands of animal paradise, full of historical significance. The Galápagos Islands are scattered along the equator. Politically they are Ecuadorian territory. The tourist attraction itself is made up of nineteen islands in northwestern South America. The island formations are perhaps the most interesting element of its geography. All the major islands, except the largest, Isabella, formed from the surface of the ocean floor. They formed from the remains of volcanoes. Isabella was made up of six volcanoes that joined at sea level. Since most of the islands contain volcanoes, there is a fear that they will erupt. (Destination)Another fascinating aspect of the Galápagos Islands is its discovery. Contrary to what many believe, the islands were discovered by chance in 1535 by Tomás de Berlanga. Berlanga was the first bishop of Panama who was sailing from Panama to Peru when he came across the islands. Once Berlanga realized the discovery he had made, he reported his new discovery to Charles V, King of Spain. In his message to the king he described these large tortoises, to which he gave the name Galápagos tortoises. (History) These turtles were King Charles' inspiration in giving the island its name. Today, Galápagos tortoises are perhaps the most famous animals underwater, in places you can't see from land or a boat. Perhaps the easiest way to see animals is to walk around the islands. This is the easiest way to see animals and plants in their natural habitat. A big attraction of the Galápagos Islands are the beaches. The water has been described as crystal clear and the beaches of the Galápagos are among the best maintained in the world. Tourists have the opportunity to sit back and relax, while watching the animals play along the beach. In conclusion, it is clear that the Galápagos Islands are a fascinating destination in the world. The popular magazine National Geographic even named the Galápagos Islands a World Heritage Site. It is because of its phenomenal tourism opportunities and historical significance. After researching this topic, I would recommend the Galápagos Islands to anyone!
