Topic > Quebec and Canada - 1261

Since the beginning of the colonization of Canada in the late 15th century, there has been controversy and anger between the English and the French. This topic is also present in the ongoing conflict between the French-speaking region of Quebec and the rest of Canada. The conflict was discussed in the Canadian parliament and from here the idea that Quebec should be an independent nation was also born. The first part of the essay will cover the general history behind the dispute between Quebec and the rest of Canada. Subsequently the essay will continue by discussing the positive and negative sides of a possible separation. The final part of the essay will compare the situation in Canada with the separation of Pakistan and East Pakistan in the 1970s. Then we will proceed to conclude whether or not a secession is possible for Quebec. Therefore, my research question is; Is there a possibility that the province of Quebec could separate from the rest of Canada? Even before the first Europeans arrived in Canada, people had been living there for about 20,000 years1. These early settlers are the predecessors of the natives of Canada known as Inuit. It was not until 1633 that the first Europeans, the French, arrived in Canada and established the first permanent European settlement there. By 1754, settlement in Canada increased dramatically, bringing French Canada into war with the British colonies. This war was known as the Seven Years' War and led to predominantly British rule in Canada. However, on July 1, 1867, Canada gained independence from Great Britain and became its own country. Today, Canada is the second largest country by area, with an abundant supply of natural resources such as fish, hydroelectric power, and timber. The... middle of the card... the rule for independence. So to answer the question of whether secession would be legal, the answer is not clear. It is not possible to know in advance that there will be a majority vote in favor of secession which would lead to the House of Commons determining this. So is there a possibility that the province of Quebec could secede from the rest of Canada? Looking on the bright side, Quebecers would become politically independent and would only need to learn one language. The downside is that Quebec would lose Canadian funding, go into debt and perhaps be boycotted. However, learning from Pakistan's history, Pakistan's separation in 1971, and the outcome, secession could be a smart move for Quebec. Weighing up the pros and cons it might be fair to say that at the moment the economic cons outweigh the independent pros, but it is still a relatively close race and only the future will tell
