Students with behavioral disorders and learning disabilities are sometimes not given the support they need to succeed in school because teachers, parents and the community do not want to care for them. However, this is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing because students need these supports to be successful. In the novel Touching Spirit Bear, we meet Cole, a fifteen-year-old teenager who has had many behavioral problems; and is on the verge of going to prison. Cole is an example of the fact that when a student with a behavioral problem or learning disability does not receive the support and services he or she should, resentment toward the world grows. Parents are expected to support their children at home in various ways, so that they can feel safe in their home and know that they are wanted and loved. Teachers and counselors are there to provide support in schools. Additionally, they need to create an environment that allows for mistakes, but we learn from those mistakes. Finally, the community must provide support in a broader sense because it must help not only those with learning difficulties or behavioral disorders, but the entire community. Touching Spirit Bear is an example of where supports went wrong, but it also provides an example of how a student can still be helped with these supports. Before I explain why parents, teachers, and community are a vital part of a student's support system, I wanted to give a brief overview of the novel Touching Spirit Bear. We are introduced to the character Cole who has had many behavioral problems in the past and present. However, his latest problem was more intense than all the others he solved. A boy named Peter told the police that it was Cole who robbed the hardware store because he bragged... middle of paper... DOJ takes into consideration all the testimonies they finally agreed to send him back.In conclusion, students need the support of parents, teachers and community to succeed in life because they are there to help you when needed. Cole may not have had a great support system in the first fifteen years of his life, but he eventually found the teachers he needed. He needed someone who actually cared and didn't just act compassionately; this is what Edwin and Garvey brought to Cole. A parent should support at home, a teacher should help at school and the community should help everyone who needs help. These three support systems offer the student the opportunity to feel loved, cared for and helped. When these three support systems work together they create accommodations, modifications, supports, and interventions for students.
