In business the focus is on profit and growth, not always sustainability. Growth can be good for the church, as discussed above, but it cannot overwhelm the culture of the church. Stonebraker (1993) in his research on optimal church size recognizes that larger churches require less money to operate per congregant, however he also recognizes that more congregants are engaged in service per congregate. Business and ministry can focus on programs and systems that lose control of individuals, which is the church. Companies tend to operate from a bottom-up leadership perspective, with leadership answerable to shareholders. Church leaders are accountable to stakeholders, so they must find a way to work together in ways that business leaders do not.
