Topic > The stupidest generation? I do not believe. - 624

People under thirty are not stupid because in the modern age time can be used more efficiently with technology. People today don't need to read chapters in a book to find the answer to a question. Students in the modern age can get work done much faster thanks to the use of technology, thus giving people much more free time to play video games or spend time on the iPhone. Generation Y has an advantage over the older generation because the younger generation has grown up with technology at their fingertips and has learned to use the Internet and its information efficiently to solve today's current problems by thinking critically. The use of technology hasn't made people stupider, but it has made everyone think differently. The fact that most people turn to the Internet to look for facts does not make those facts any less valuable than if they were found in a book. Today people process much more information than in the past because technology has increased the amount of information that can be displayed. Thanks to the Internet, people have access to much more information. “Since the 1930s IQ scores have increased” (Begley) With the advent of technology, IQ scores have increased. How can technology make us stupid? With new technologies like video games, brains have been trained to process large amounts of information at once. Some argue that video games make people stupid, but further studies have shown that video games increase the brain's dexterity. (Johnson) Older generations say that Gen Y people don't read enough, but they don't take into account that the younger generation is reading step-by-step tutorials to complete a game like Grand Theft Auto III. In the tutorial there is... half the paper... today's youth are found on the Internet. Why waste time going to the library or spend money buying a magazine when the same article is free on the Internet. Using the Internet doesn't make us stupid. It's an advantage that the older generation didn't have. The fact that the older generation criticizes us for using the Internet is reckless and stupid. Why not use a tool that is given to us. It's like someone was given a hammer to hammer a nail into the wall, but you don't use the hammer - it's stupid. Before you criticize a generation, keep in mind that things change. If you can't adapt, you won't survive. Being able to adapt is key to surviving, whether it's school or survival. Works Cited Shea, Renée Hausmann, Lawrence Scanlon, and Robin Dissin Aufses.
