My plans after earning my advanced degree are to become licensed to practice as an AGNP in the state of Texas. The Texas BON recognizes that APN education, experiences and levels of expertise vary, therefore, holds individual APNs accountable for knowing and practicing within their scope of practice and expertise. The APN's training underpins their scope of practice: however, the APN can broaden the scope of practice within the role and population focus, as long as it remains within the bounds of the law. The Texas BON limits the scope of APNs. Nurse supervision laws require the APN to work under the supervision of a physician within a seventy-five mile perimeter. Additionally, there are Texas nurse prescribing laws that require APNs to prescribe medications under physician supervision, and APNs are not permitted to prescribe two medications.
