Cities, suburbs, and rural areas all have schools because students are required to go to school. This creates limited travel for teachers because teachers may live in the area where they choose to teach. Most traveling teachers have to go on field trips. Even though teaching seems like a one-way career, it is not. Teachers can become principals, vice principals, Board of Education directors, and superintendents. Additionally, teachers earn additional pay. As is evident from the starting salary and average salary, teachers do not stick to the lower salary amounts, so by staying longer at the same school, they get paid more. After 1-7 years of staying in the same school, higher-level teachers obtain tenure. Tenure is academic freedom with job security in a union contract (A Brief History of Tenure). That's one of the biggest benefits of teaching: job security and the fact that you'll be there for a long time
