Civil War The American Civil War is known as one of the toughest battles to ever take place. The war took place from 1861 to 1865. This war divided the nation into two parts. The North, also known as the Union, was ruled by President Abraham Lincoln. However, the South, also known as the Rebels, was governed by President Jefferson Davis. It was the result of decades of sectional tension between the North and the South involving slavery and states' rights. Furthermore, the growth of nationalism in the United States was replaced by sectionalism which led to the outbreak of the Civil War. One of the major factors that contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War was slavery. Slavery was a major economic problem for the South and a major moral problem for the North. Slavery was also the primary force that led southern slave states to leave the Union. Slavery also caused a deep division in the nation around 1850. The South's view of slavery was that it was a good thing and that they were dependent on it. They depended on slavery to run their large plantations and take care of their main crop, cotton. Their economy was more agricultural and required slaves as workers in the fields and plantations. The South really depended on slavery after Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin in 1793. It was a machine that shortened the time it took to remove seeds from cotton. With the invention of the cotton gin many plantations abandoned other crops to produce cotton. With more and more cotton plantations the need for cheap labor involving slaves increased. The South soon became a monoculture economy and was dependent on cotton and then slavery. The South believed that slaves with...... middle of paper ...... Lincoln's election. They believed he was on their side and would help abolish slavery. This war faces many consequences that remain on the nation today. After the end of the war there were a total of 600,000 deaths between the two sides. The South was also completely destroyed. Therefore it was under complete reconstruction and he spent a lot of money to rebuild it. However, there were some positive consequences from the war. The main problem of slavery is gone and will never be a problem again. Furthermore, it ultimately reunited the nation as a whole. The Civil War is known as a very harsh war that profoundly affected the nation. The North and South could not agree and fought for power and control. The United States ultimately faced many consequences after the war. However, he abolished slavery and shaped the future of the United States.
