International travel can allow people to exchange ideas, gain valuable life experiences, and gain greater wisdom that can only be gained during the course of their travel. However, despite the possible benefits of international travel, it can potentially harm countries that are strongly attached to their own culture. In this case, Brunei Darussalam, as a country, strongly emphasizes the philosophy of the Malay Islamic monarchy. Since the nation's philosophy plays a vital role in Brunei's way of life, the exchange of views from other countries can pose a threat to its traditional cultures, particularly in the areas of language, Malay customs and environment. First of all, with international travel, people inevitably have to use international languages to communicate, which affects the use of our native and second languages. One of the many threats arising from international travel stems from the need to communicate with foreigners. It is inevitable that people make use of international languages and this indirectly affects our mother tongue. Malay has been the official language of Brunei Darussalam since the 1959 Constitution of Brunei on 29 September of the same year. Although Malay dominates neighboring ASEAN countries, it has yet to be recognized in other places. Therefore, as people rely on foreign languages when going abroad, it opens up the opportunity for them to be bilingual. Learning another language, however, can cause a problem recognized by Wallace Lambert as "subtractive bilingualism". Lambert (1975, 1977, 1981) stated that while people are achieving new verbal ability, they have consequently failed to maintain their native language and therefore the idea of bilingualism is inc... middle of paper.. . having to prioritize entertainment over greenery. The well-known activist Beard (1930) describes travel as “more than seeing places; it is a change that continues, profound and permanent, in the ideas of living”. In short, worthy efforts to preserve our local values cannot eliminate the challenges of globalization. However, it can minimize the impact international travel has on our cultures. It is up to our country's preparedness to overcome the problems and try to acquire as many benefits as possible by incorporating ideas gained from international travel into its national development strategies to satisfy all stakeholders and improve the condition of Brunei. Otherwise, not only has Brunei lost its culture, but future generations will also not be able to experience the similar cultures that our ancestors experienced decades ago..
