Topic > Gun Control and Violence in the United States - 1620

As we know, many violent crimes are related to firearms. Gun violence has been quite common for Americans. Some incidents of gun violence have caused significant events, such as the deaths of Senator Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. According to Kellerman, Rivara, Somes, Reay, Francisco, Banton, Prodzinski, Fligner, and Hackman (1992), more than 29,000 Americans commit suicide each year and the suicide rate continues to increase. More people kill themselves with firearms than with other methods. Each year “approximately 400 American children die needlessly and more than 3,500 are injured from unintentional gunshot wounds” (Glatt, 2005). According to Hahn, Bilukha, Crosby, Fullilove, Liberman, Moscicki, Snyder, Tuma & Briss (2005), although gun violence rates in the United States have declined since 1993, in 2001 they were still the second leading cause of injury-related death. The research paper will clarify gun control and violence in the United States by answering the following questions:1. Why has gun control been such a difficult issue in American politics?2. What is the relationship between firearms and violence?3. What are the gun control laws in the United States? Through gun culture, politics, violence, and gun-related actions, this research paper will clarify the relationship between guns and violence, as well as the importance and need for gun control. Why has gun control been such a difficult issue in American politics? According to Spitzer (2004), in recent years, more than 30,000 Americans have been killed annually due to homicidal, accidental, and suicidal use of firearms (p 7). He mentions that Americans intimidate, injure, and kill hundreds of thousands of people with guns every year. These actions have many negative effects, such as messing up A...... middle of paper ......and selling firearms without a background check is illegal in that state,” banning .50 caliber rifles, mandating all new semi-automatic pistols featuring “micro stamping” technology and “legislation requiring sellers of handgun ammunition to keep records of buyers” (p 96) Conclusion In conclusion, by answering these three questions, we can understand why the control of guns has been such a difficult issue in American politics and the relationship between guns and violence, as well as the importance and need for gun control. Furthermore, we also understand that the government ban on gun ownership by individuals will have multiple benefits, for example this policy can effectively reduce the number of shootings, through the relationship between guns and violence Although there are many gun control laws in the United States, gun control has been a very difficult issue in the United States.
