The Supreme Court ruled by a vote of 5 to 4 that the Constitution guarantees the right to same-sex marriage. A recent news report says that US President Barack Obama is satisfied with the end of the approval of the gay marriage law in the state of New York. New York will become the largest and last state to legalize gay marriage. And the US leader said that “the time has come to allow gay marriage as a national policy” [2]. After many years of fighting against the legalization of same-sex marriage, gays and lesbians can finally marry under the law. Gay marriage has been much debated in the news lately. While several countries have some form of gay marriage on the books, the Netherlands recently became the first country to give same-sex couples in civil unions the same rights as heterosexual married couples [1]. In my opinion, same-sex marriage should become an established and accepted institution in societies around the world. My first reason for legalizing same-sex marriage is that same-sex marriage will save a lot of money every year. For starters, according to Susan Sommer, director of constitutional litigation at Lambda Legal, “there are hundreds of different protections and benefits under New York law [3].” After the New York law goes into effect, gay couples will gain many financial benefits and legal rights. Additionally, same-sex couples earning less than $65,000 may pay less income tax than opposite-sex couples. Additionally, same-sex married couples will receive estate and gift taxes, state employee benefits, and some potential future benefits [3]. Another compelling reason to legalize same-sex marriage is that everyone is equal, so people's rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are all inalienable, and same-sex marriage is the most effective in ensuring equal human rights. Human equality is the protection of citizens and people will have the freedom to marry, so they will have the right to choose their partner, regardless of gender. So I thought it was wrong to ban same-sex marriage, which is not human rights. My final reason for legalizing same-sex marriage is that there is no evidence to suggest that gay parents will raise gay children, since heterosexual parents not only raise heterosexual children. Many naysayers have claimed that gay parents will teach their children to become gay or lesbian, but so far there is no reliable news or evidence that this has happened...
