Lily faced her own form of racism when she believed her caregiver Rosaleen was like any other uneducated black person. Lily and Rosaleen were taking a trip to the city and their lives had changed. Lily witnessed her black caregiver, Rosaleen, being beaten by 3 white males for spilling snuff on their shoes. This was an unnecessary act of violence and she did not deserve this treatment. The reason she was beaten by these men was because of the color of her skin. The worst thing is that when all this happened there was a policeman present who did absolutely nothing to help. Instead he held Lily back so she wouldn't intervene in the attack. This shows how corrupt the justice system was and how they allowed almost anything to happen. The justice system had its own kind of laws and in these laws blacks never prevailed. The men who attacked Rosaleen were white and were not arrested or charged with anything. Rosaleen was arrested for nothing and Lily was freed, then the police tried to charge Rosaleen with stealing fans from the church so she could stay in prison. Police brutality has been a trending topic in the media for decades. It has been said that the police use excessive force against minorities. All over television there are cases of police killings or excessive force on black people and things like that
