After his rise to power, Hitler took full control of every aspect of art and destroyed everything he considered "destructive to culture" (Naas). This caused many German directors to move to the United States where the film industry was growing exponentially. They bring with them their own styles and techniques, a new genre formed in the mid-1930s called film noir. Film noir, like German Expressionism, focuses on negative emotions such as helplessness and madness, while at the same time using the same aesthetics such as black and white contrast. Unlike German expressionist directors, American film noir directors brought a new motif to American audiences: the femme fatale. The dark and strong femme fatale of noir is the female protagonist of these films. These women are not only given sexual powers, but also ambitions (Belton). These women clash with the male protagonist, who is usually antisocial and must be strong in his criminality
