Topic > How Christopher Columbus is a Hero - 1348

During our years in school, we are taught about world history and how history books always glorify Christopher Columbus as a hero or as the greatest explorer of all time . However, as I read chapter two of the book “Lies My Teacher Told Me” by James W. Loewen, I wondered whether or not Christopher Columbus should be considered a hero? Based on the first four chapters of the book "The Lies My Teacher Told Me" and my own experience, I discovered how history books portrayed Christopher Columbus as a role model and turns Helen Keller into student ignorance. However, how many students know some inconvenient facts about Christopher Columbus; who was Helen Keller. In the first chapter of the book “Lies My Teacher, this chapter of the book amazed; is the answer to whether or not Christopher Columbus should be considered a hero. Although we all appreciate Columbus's involvement in the search for the New World and even named his name as a holiday. However, after reading and experiencing this chapter, I was faced with some statements about him that made me believe that he is not the model described in the history books. Furthermore, I completely disagree that Christopher Columbus is a hero. For example, in chapter 2 of the book, Loewen states that “When Columbus and his men returned to Haiti in 1493, they asked for food, gold, spun cotton, everything the natives wanted, including sex with their women. To ensure cooperation, Columbus used punishment by example.” In this passage it is shown that Columbus did not treat the Native Americans as human beings, it seems that he was a dictator, and he came here on purpose, to conquer everything and steal the riches of the land. What James wants to say is to tell the public that people like Christopher Columbus and Woodrow Wilson do not deserve to be role models and that history textbooks should not omit and tell all sides the whole. For me, Ho Chi Minh and Christopher have some in the commons. For example, when I was in Vietnam, my knowledge of this guy is a good leader, a leader of perfect achievement according to the Vietnamese textbook. However, when I came to America and studied American high school textbooks, I realized that I had been brainwashed for 14 years about Ho Chi Minh. First of all, how the Vietnamese textbook omitted facts about Ho Chi Minh during the Vietnam War. He asked for help from Russia, he asked for money, weapons and army to fight South Vietnam, which is supported by American troops. He also offered aid and trade to China by selling 2 important lands of Vietnam (Hoang SA, Truong SA) to China. However, South Vietnam did not win due to a perfect plan by Ho Chi Minh. He sent spies into the Southern army and secondly too many American troops had fallen so South Vietnam had no support and then they were conquered by Ho Chi Minh and he turned Vietnam into a communist country. There are many facts about Ho Chi Minh that are hidden from the Vietnamese textbook: “Hue Massacre 1968,” more than 3,500 Vietnamese fell in that fight, and “Agrarian reform in North Vietnam 1946-1957” – he said. he sent his army to conquer and
