His broken sword represents his attempt to fight against the German and Italian engines of modern warfare. However, the fight he supported was unfortunately not enough to influence the outcome of the bombing of Guernica. It is a powerful image for him that symbolizes as a sign of defeat. However, if you look closely, there is a flower drawn very lightly above the sword, almost imperceptible.
