There have been many acts of violence in schools, including many tragic school shootings. Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hooks Elementary were some of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. Many violence prevention programs have been established and used to prevent such acts. The most used prevention program is called the Zero Tolerance Program. Other programs have been used, but have they proven to be successful programs? School problems and bullying are some of the problems linked to school violence, but some of these problems can come from home. Some of the school shootings and other violent acts don't come from a student at the school, sometimes they come from someone outside. The Sandy Hooks School shooter was not a student. The school system is sometimes more concerned about the students' success in life and does not realize that there is a problem with the student and that he or she may need mental attention. The media is always there when a tragedy occurs. Are people trying to get media attention when they are creating a horrible act? Many schools have implemented intervention and prevention programs, but are they working? Schools are trying to prevent school violence due to horrific shootings in the past. Some of the deadliest cases have occurred in the last 15 years. Columbine was the most remembered high school shooting, Virginia Tech University was the deadliest college shooting, and Sandy Hooks was the most recent and tragic elementary school shooting. In these cases some were caused by bullying, others were mentally unhealthy students. Schools are trying to recognize the signs of bullying and take action against b...... middle of paper... the best way to discipline students. It also takes away value from students academically. Many problems that the school system sees begin at home, with the parents and with the environment in which the child lives. Suspending students from school is sometimes not the best thing for them. Sometimes they need counseling instead. When the school detects a problem with a student, it should be addressed at that time, rather than waiting to see if something else results. But schools should not only keep an eye on students, but also on outsiders. The best way to do this is through good security measures. Mass media can make people want to follow in the footsteps of others and this can be a problem for future problems. Will violence in schools ever end? Probably not, but we can do what we can to reduce these cases.
