Vietnam was in a state of turmoil during the mid-20th century; after gaining independence from imperialist France, the country was divided between nationalist political parties in the South and communists in the North. Although the United States had tried hard to support France during the revolution, after the coup it was inclined to support nationalist South Vietnam rather than the communist North. Thus the United States made an unwise political commitment to Vietnam that would lead to the longest and most unpopular war in the nation's history. Vietnam represents an important chapter in American history, for its symbolic significance in an era when the slogan "make love, not war" was prominent and for its direct relevance to internal political conflicts during the Cold War; and the amount of effort the United States was forced to make in that period regarding the spread of communism. The soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War were the least celebrated warriors in American history; when they returned from the battlefield after their terrible ordeal in the Vietnamese jungle, they were tormented with nicknames such as "baby killer", by citizens protesting against the war. Anti-war music illustrated the way people felt at the time, songs like Joe McDonald's "I Feel Like I'm Going to Die" were well known and used as a sort of rallying tool to unite the masses who they were against the war. war in Vietnam. It is well known that the Vietnam War was the most unpopular war in our history to date, the time for war could not have come at a worse time; because the Vietnam era also turned out to be the era of the sexual revolution, the era of love and peace. US citizens were not the only…paper medium…the Soviet Union and the US had to prove which country was more powerful by using the Vietnamese indirectly; the two countries have taken their rivalries to the next level. The war in Vietnam also illustrates the ideological revolution of the time that American citizens were going through, in an era in which "love and peace" were the main slogan of the new American lifestyle. The word "war" has become absolutely detestable, as demonstrated by the numerous anti-war protests. I chose to write an article about the Vietnam War because I believe that the Vietnam War was the best representative event of its time. It was a war that threatened to dismantle our government, a war that mirrored other events in Latin America and Europe involving the Soviet Union and the United States; and a symbol of how far the United States was willing to go to win the Cold War.
