The migration of people has caused challenges in the education system, so public schools have made an effort to be multicultural for the needs of their students. In An Introduction to Multicultural Education: From Theory to Practice “Historical Foundations of Multicultural Education in the United States” by Chinaka Samuel Domnwachukwu defines multicultural education: “It is seen as an attempt to create awareness and tolerance among related cultures and people all over the world” (Domnwachukwu, 84). Multicultural education is an important component of learning, especially in a school with a large minority population. For example, a large population of students attending a public school are not as advanced in their English vocabulary as those whose only language and form of communication is English. Public schools have found ways to do what they can with English Language Learners (ELL) students, because they are aware of the obstacles students face in mastering a second language. In the United States, English has been the dominant language taught in the classroom, and the challenge for ELL students is to make the effort to perform to the best of their ability despite their English. For teachers, communicating with ELL students presents a challenge when the student is not proficient in academic language and struggles with the daily task of being able to act as independently as his or her peers.
