Not only was automotive fuel harmful to the environment, but it was becoming very expensive. Fluctuating fuel prices have led the American people to express their frustrations to the government; who then created laws to correct the problem. With this new legislation in place, automakers had to invent technology to produce more fuel-efficient cars. (Highfill et al., 2004) Automobile manufacturers decided that electric cars would be the best way to meet legislative needs. (Highfill et al., 2004) Soon after, Honda, Toyota, and Accura began making strides in hybrid car production, however, GM was still the leader in hydrogen fuel. (Highfill et al., 2004) The rivalry was already high and now it has the appearance of alternative fuels brought into play. GM had to make a difficult decision regarding whether to develop hydrogen fuel technology or catch up with rivals with hybrid car production; in which they fell slightly behind.
