Okonkwo is the main character of the book Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe. Okonkwo is an individual who has many different personalities that are portrayed in different situations. He can be a kind and welcoming individual but also a violent and harmful individual. Before returning to Umofia, where missionaries had invaded, Okonkwo had grown up resenting his father's laziness, dedicating his time to proving that he was much better than his father. Which was more respectable and masculine. These were the qualities that Okonkwo's father lacked. Once he reaches Umofia, Okonkwo becomes more passive than he has ever been. As he witnesses the arrival of the missionaries with pain and sorrow because he cannot do anything. The missionaries had transformed Okonkwo into a completely different individual. Changing it for the worse. Okonkwo was not at all happy with the arrival of the missionaries. The missionaries changed Okonkwo's way of thinking and how he presented himself. In reaction to Enoch's crime of exposing an egwugwu, Okonkwo and the other Umofia leader launch an attack, destroying the missionaries' church. Okonkwo had other intentions and had recommended multiple violent actions to the point of killing the missionaries. However, the group had only ended up burning down their church. As Okonkwo had stated, “He knew he was a fierce fighter, but that year had been enough to break the heart of a lion.” (pg.20) Okonkwo was following his own advice because he was fighting for what he believed in. inside and from what he knew it was wrong. The missionaries had changed Okonkwo's outlook on life. He was no longer the sweet, loving, caring individual he was upon his return. He n... middle of paper ......suicide is his third and final offense against the earth. “It is an abomination for a man to take his own life. It is an offense against the Earth, and a man who commits it will not be buried by his clansmen. His body is evil and only strangers can touch it…” (ch.25) To conclude, Okonkwo had started his life strong. Stand up and learn right from wrong. Having a role model like his father who showed him what not to do in life influenced him and had a great impact on his life. Arriving in Umofia, he met the missionaries. The missionaries also changed and influenced his life. They showed him attitude and how to care less about people. Okonkwo has had many difficult times in his life and has been through a lot. Overall Okonkwo was a very strong character. He stayed strong as long as he could until he couldn't fight for himself anymore and it was all over.
