Throughout history, sociology has played an important role in understanding social issues that have developed and recurred in various societies around the world. Therefore, sociology is considered as the study of human social behavior and its development of structures and functions in a society. As a result of this study, multiple sociological theories have developed to explain social phenomena and help provide a broader explanation for social interaction and human existence. Social theories can be thought of as pieces of a puzzle because they allow us to put together empirical data and interpret the facts necessary to understand what is happening in our mundane societies. This also explains why social theories are often very abstract as they are used. Social theory allows sociologists to question all aspects of society and develop theories about why certain human behaviors occur. Therefore, studying social theory helps explain these theories and allows people to understand their importance. A great example of this understanding would be Emile Durkheim's theory of the division of labor in society. This theory creates a vision of how modern society is not held together by the similarities of people but rather by the division of labor. According to the textbook Sociological Theory "it is the division of labor itself that unites people, forcing them to depend on each other, and that the economic services it can render are insignificant compared to the moral effect it produces and that its true function is create a feeling of solidarity between two or more people” (Ritzer & Siepnisky, 2011, p. 85). From this example it is clear that it is important to study social theory to understand how society might function in relation to work. Without its study, along with other theories, people would be lost in trying to interpret and understand society. When considering the theories that sociology presents to us, it is important to keep an open mind and allow ourselves to question and think about our lives and ideas regarding society. Therefore, making hypotheses is one of the main reasons why we should study social theory because it also allows us to question existing ideas formulated by sociologists, such as Marx, Durkheim or Weber. For example, Karl Marx has long been questioned about his work with capitalism and his most famous work, The Communist Manifesto. Marx is an iconic sociologist due to the symbolism associated with his name; however, many of the points in his work allow us to keep an open mind and ask how his work relates to today's society or how his predictions are proven wrong or true. By questioning these existing ideas and theories, we can then question our own thinking and find justifications for supporting or abandoning them
